We currently have a vacancy for a Research Software Engineer. The role will involve developing and supporting the department to build a Software Engineering group (SGE).
The SEG provides a continuous integration service for other the Compuses. It is designed to assist researchers in developing high quality and well tested code for
use in their work.
The SGE is currently expanding the range of tools and platforms supported and is intending to include High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms, which is an exciting and innovative opportunity. The role will also provide advice, guidance and support for those new to the service and/or new to automated testing, allowing researchers to gain the most benefit from the service.
The duties will include:
- Implementation of additional build nodes across a range of platforms, including links to HPC services
- Integration of new tools and compilers within the Jenkins environment.
- User support of the SEG including assisting new users and projects
- Development of specialised material for supporting software testing and continuous integration
- Responsibility for the day to day running of the service
There will be opportunities to share this work with others in the wider professional community.
This role will require occasional travel to other locations.
Shortlisting Criteria
Essential:
A degree in an appropriate computing or technical discipline, or demonstrate significant relevant expertise.
Experience in programming languages such as Java, C, C++ and/or Python
Desirable:
Experience of running production services and supporting users
Analysis and evaluation of user requirements experience.
Experience of a variety of operating systems including Linux and Windows
Experience in software engineering within the academic community

Ability to demonstrate experience of best practice software development lifecycles.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills so as to work effectively with a range of staff and stakeholders.
Analytical and problem-solving capability, and the ability to show sound judgement. (judged through the practical exercise)
Understanding of continuous integration and its benefits to software development,
Desirable:
Experience of running Jenkins or another CI framework
Experience of a wide range of programming languages, especially those used in academic environments
Experience of the whole software development lifecycle
Experience of using High Performance Computing
Experience of the operational requirements of production systems, including change control and configuration management systems.
